Having been through quite a few cycles of personal stupidity myself, Insolu, having believed, and then just as fervently rejected, I put nearly no faith in individual learning-- even less so in a cultural collective learning. I try not just to be skeptical of liberal utopianism, but even my own modest conservative version-- hoping, say, that people will figure out that oil is fungible and that we can't really be "energy independent" in the way that some believe. Or that corporate taxes are a really stupid idea.

So my pessimism, like yours, sees no way out of the current hole.

Where my optimism lies, is in the knowledge that every generation looks up out of the same hole, and somehow nobody ever guesses as they pass on to their children an undreamt-of bounty, just how shallow of a pit they were actually in.

Besides, how can I have no hope, having just driven the Evil Emperor back down to Camp Pendleton after a weekend spent with his Mom & I and brothers and sisters? We watched the Angels win from just above first base, laughed like hell more than once, and washed and dried some truly frightening cammis.

The fight goes on.

I like to call it para-phasing.

When this current cycle of failed liberal joke solutions is given its chance to teach the American body, through delayed consequences, what a major economic hangover is like, do you, a4g, as an obviously intelligent person, think that people will learn from the mistake?

Will they retreat to a pre-installed set of false solutions. Will the products of our public schools and universities, still seek relief in the 'hair of the sophist dog'?

Or.. Will these kids do what kids often do. Will they respect their parents and ignore their 'teachers'? Will they apply natural reason to public policy and reject the insanity that is unfolding before us?

I think the ancient Greeks of the Hellenistic age would have appreciated and applauded our sarcastic wit and talent for contemporary satire as great theatre. Of course the democratic Greek civilizations were collapsing, in collective will and organization, to slavery and subjugation to another civilized power.

It did not matter that their cultural cultivation was superior in any way. Rome took the elements that were useful and pleasant and discarded the rest. They still sacked Corinth.

Will radical Islam and political correctness be destroyed, before they really slap us down with violence and conviction.

I really want to continue to laugh, but my thoughts, of too many serious concerns, keep chopping off my laughter off prematurely.

Our current slate of candidates, only reinforces my pessimism.
